Looking for inspiration and encouragement? Look no further. Michelle Obama’s newly released book, The Light We Carry, is all of that and more. The former first lady shares coping strategies for surviving stress and uncertainty. She also speaks directly to those who struggle with being themselves, authentically. And in a world where Black Americans often feel that hair, diction, and appearance have to fit a White standard in order to be accepted and to move up in the world, Michelle offers some very candid advice. The Light We Carry is a refreshing reminder that no matter your position or background, as Black Americans, we all face similar challenges, but we have to stay true to our beliefs and ourselves.
In The Light We Carry, she helps the readers use past experiences to help cope with current situations. These “tools” are what carry you through life and help you achieve your goals one step at a time. The Light We Carry is much like a continuation of her first book, Becoming, where she shares a deeply personal account of how she steadily defied expectations, celebrated triumphs and coped with disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms.
What you can appreciate about Michelle Obama’s work is that it is always authentic, insightful, and powerful. She gives a message of hope and encouragement with an understanding that you don’t have to be perfect in order to be great! All you need is a mindset to do so and supporters along the way.
